Winter Soltice and Snowman Paper Plate Clock

According to the Old Farmer's Almanac winter will START in 3 days on December 21 at 12:11 PM!!!!! But if you look out any of my windows you will already see LOTS of snow.

Winter in New England

This is a great time to get in a science lesson teaching the younger kids about the 4 seasons and the older kids about the Winter Solstice (if you live in the northern hemisphere).  On December 21 (the winter solstice), we will have the shortest day of the year (fewest hours of sunlight). This is caused by the Earth's orbit and the axis of the Earth being tilted away from the Sun (in the northern hemisphere). The angle of the tilt is 23.44 degrees.

You could also tie in a math lesson about time by making a fun winter paper plate clock with the kids. Instead of using a decorated plate as pictured below, the kids could draw their own snowman or other winter theme on a plain paper plate then add the extras to turn their paper plate into a clock. This will be great to use all winter during math lessons.

Turkey Time Paper Plate Clock

Here is a simple and fun Thanksgiving Project to make with the kids. The kids can use the clock all month to practice their Telling Time skills.

I found these turkey paper plates at the supermarket but you could use a solid color plate and have students draw a fun turkey in the middle.

The felt numbers were purchased at a craft store (with a discount coupon). This particular set needed to be glued on the plate but most packages of numbers already have a sticky backing.

The clock hands were cut from craft foam purchased at the dollar store and the brass fastener was bought in a box at Staples but can also be purchased at supermarkets, drug stores, etc.

Many students have difficulty learning to tell time with analog clocks, so providing them with a fun activity where they can make their own clock should be an incentive to practice this skill.

Halloween Paper Plate Clock

Learning to tell time can be a very difficult concept for some kids. Here's a Halloween clock that the kids can create to make learning more fun. Plus by tying in crafts with a holiday project the kids won't realize that they are in fact working on a math concept.

Materials Needed

  • paper plate (decorated or solid color)
  • number stickers or markers
  • craft foam or cardboard
  • scissors
  • brass fastener
  • crayons

Directions

Use a Halloween decorated paper plate. (These plates were found at the supermarket. The cost was $1.00 for a set of 8 paper plates.) Or, use a plain paper plate and have students decorate the plate with crayons, colored pencils, etc. (Lots of great color plates can be found at the Dollar Stores.)

Have students place the number stickers on the appropriate places on the clock, or write the numbers on the clock with a marker or other writing tool.

With younger students the adult should cut 2 hands for the clock with craft foam or cardboard and attach the hands to the clock with a brass fastener.

To see lots of other paper plate clocks that you can make with students, click on the links below.

Conductors of Electricity and Electromagnets

My last post shared some ideas for teaching about Current Electricity - Electric, Series, and Parallel Circuits. You can view that post here.

Investigating Electricity

In today's post, I want to share links to 2 activities. In the 1st activity students test materials to see if the materials are a conductor or insulator of electricity. In the 2nd activity students build and investigate electromagnets.

Hands-On Science - Investigating Electricity

Last week, I did a post on investigating Static Electricity. If you missed that post you can view it here.

Current Electricity

For today, I put together some posts with activities to help you teach about Current Electricity: Electric Circuits, Series Circuits, and Parallel Circuits. These are the lessons where the students will get to light those mini-light bulbs.

Besides using the supplies usually found in the science kits, everyone should wear safety goggles and safety gloves. The kids love to put on the safety equipment. It makes them feel like real scientists and that these will be very special lessons!  :)
